« Can a student claim back PAYE tax »
Whilst I was a student I had a number of part and full time jobs on which I paid tax. As an overseas student can I claim back any overpaid tax?
The fact that you are a student, and from overseas for that matter, is irrelevant as all employees can claim back any tax that has been over paid. Every employee has a tax code which dictates the amount of tax free pay they can earn over the tax year and is split into either weekly or monthly amounts depending on the pay frequency. Due to the, mainly, short periods of work that students do and the, more often than not, lack of a P45 for the next job, they may end up paying too much tax on their periodic earnings when calculated over the year. If a P45 has been obtained from each job and then handed to the next employer and providing you are still being paid as of 5th April your tax should be correct over the year. If any of the above are not true you may have overpaid and providing you have proof of your earnings it is a simple matter to obtain a refund direct from your local HMRC office, without proof it is still possible but very much more difficult.
