Qualification

In general, every person who has started working for you, and is therefore an employee, is entitled to SSP from day one. The contract of employment can not deny or diminish these employee rights.

To qualify an employee must:

  • earn the Lower Earnings Limit for NI a week or more
  • pay national insurance contributions if their wages were high enough or the employer pays national insurance contributions on the employees wages
  • have a Period of Incapacity for Work (PIW) of at least 4 days or
  • have received SSP within the last 8 weeks and a new PIW of at least 4 days
  • have been paid less than 28 full consecutive weeks of SSP in the current PIW

Using this to help calculate your employee payroll?

This may be free but it is not a substitute for a professional payroll system. It is your responsibility to correctly calculate all statutory payments and the tax and NI deductions to and from your employees wages. This calculator is accurate but it assumes either none or three waiting days, makes no checks on the employees age or number of weeks of SSP previously paid and so on.

We will calculate your SSP for you

We can provide a quick and professional solution to your payroll headaches and the good news is that, from only £1.44p per payslip, it is amazingly cost effective. Why wait??
